Economic Optimisation Potential of Pipes With a Crack Resistant Polyethylene and Protective Outer Layer during Heated Element Butt Welding

The ongoing optimization of polyethylene pipes, especially through the use of bimodal materials and protective coatings, enables the butt welding process to be accelerated without compromising the anticipated minimum lifespan of 100 years.

The long-term strength of polyethylene pipes has been progressively enhanced through the development stages from PE 63 to PE 80 and ultimately to PE 100. The introduction of bimodal PE materials has led to further advancements in stress crack resistance. Additionally, pipes made from stress crack-resistant materials that are coated for protection against external damage have shown significant improvements. The increased creep resistance offered by these enhanced properties can facilitate the acceleration of the butt welding process. This article discusses the conditions under which this optimization potential can be fully realized without compromising the expected minimum lifespan of 100 years.
